Broken Foot

What this blog is about: My broken 5th metatarsal, on my left foot.
Why I created this blog: There weren't a lot of individual stories with the break.
Why my broken foot blog is a little different: The break wasn't displaced, no surgery was required.

August 13th: I was walking downstairs from my apartment and assumed I was on the last step. I was not. I stepped with my left foot to take a stride, I was on the third step. I didn't fall down the stairs, I stepped over two stairs and landed on my left foot. I heard horrid crunching and snapping sounds. I assumed the worst. The pain was instantaneous, I felt nauseous and dizzy. But no one was home, no one was around. I yelled for help but no one came. I managed to crawl back up 15 stairs and get into my apartment. I called my mom to come take me to the hospital. I had crutches from a friend that were in my apartment, thank goodness! Got to the hospital. I'll spare you the emergency room details. The doctor came back with my x-rays and showed me that I had broken my 5th metatarsal. It wasn't displaced and wouldn't require surgery but said to not bear weight on it and gave me a shoe. Here is the kicker, I don't have insurance.

August 20th: It's been a week since I broke my foot. I live in an upstairs apartment, have to drive myself to work, am a student teacher and have to hobble around the classroom five days a week. I am giving up on crutches and getting a knee scooter. The crutches are causing me so much pain in my arms, hands, just my entire body. I'm supposed to get a follow up x-ray today, but as I said, I don't have any insurance. I just have to hope it's healing correctly.

August 22nd: I got my fancy knee scooter! It is so much better than crutches. I am still sore from the crutches but can tell it's getting so much better. I just have to have someone carry it up the stairs for me every time I go home. I miss the little things like grocery shopping and showering normally! I finally could get into the bath tub by myself today. That was a feat on it's own. I really took my foot for granted before I broke it.

August 27th: Bruising is almost gone! It's been two weeks, I can't believe how purple it is! But I went off a curb with my knee scooter. I grabbed the fence by me and thought all was well, but then I swung while holding it and slammed my right thigh into the scooters handle. Now I have a lovely bruise that is about 5 x 3 inches on my thigh.

August 29th: This bruise is making it even harder to get around! Why couldn't the bruise have been on my left leg, it's not doing anything but sitting on the scooter.

September 14th: The pain is almost entirely gone. It throbs at times and seems a bit sore. I currently have it propped up on some pillows because it is throbbing a bit. It swells once in a while, got kinda blue the other day. I think I had my bandage too tight on it. I really need to find a doctor to go into so I can see when I'm supposed to be putting weight on it. I haven't put any weight on it yet. Also my left calf has no muscle definition. I started noticing this about a week after I broke my foot. I bought a walking boot online today. I know that I will need to transition to that soon. If I don't get to the doctor I'm going to use my best judgement and what information I have gotten offline and on 6 weeks (September 24th) will start using a crutch with the walking boot. I recommend going to the doctor to find out all the information you need. But I'm student teaching and not working and have no insurance, I know it's not an excuse but it is my reasoning at the current time.
